I thought of going wireless at home. I bought D-Link router. I had two network card in PC connected to AirTel supplied Beetel ADSL Modem. One on which modem was connected and other network card for home networking through a switch.

I went through the manual that came with router.

I was confused whether to connect router to network card whether modem was connected or to home network card. I first tried network card where modem was connected. It did not work.

I then connected to network card which was connected to home network. Through http://192.168.0.1/, I was able to access router and configure as per setup steps in manual. Everything seems to be working OK on wireless now.

Basically any network card could have worked, as long as it let you connect with router, generally without any IP settings in network card.

I was very happy. That happiness was not long lasting. I use outlook as mail client. I had to send some urgent emails, I found all stuck in outbox.

I discounted any issue with ISP because it works fine at office and home just before fixing router. I went through router manual but no clue.

Then I search net for clues. I saw at some forums that others have faced similar problem. They discussed fixing the issue by setting same MTU number in router and modem.

I could see router MTU as 1500. However I was not able to connect modem to get its MTU. I did not call IPS since it was late. What I rather did, searched net again for Beetel modem and MTU as keyworkds. I found that it generally uses MTU of 1492.

I changed MTU in router to 1492. Bingo. Everything worked.
